Emulsion – Slow Setting

A slow-setting bitumen emulsion is ideal for various applications such as road maintenance, surface treatments, and tack coats. It is designed to have a delayed breaking or curing time, facilitating efficient application and ensuring proper adhesion between bitumen and aggregates.

FAQs

Slow setting bitumen emulsion is mainly used for road maintenance, surface treatments, fog seals, slurry seals, and tack coats, and patch repair works in road construction. Its extended breaking time allows the emulsion to penetrate deeply into porous road bases, creating better bonding between layers and improving pavement durability.

The main difference between these grades lies in their viscosity, residue hardness, and intended application.

  • SS1 – Low viscosity grade used for prime coats and surface sealing.
  • SS2 – Higher viscosity grade suitable for slurry seal and maintenance treatments.
  • CSS1(H) – Cationic slow setting grade with harder residue, designed for stronger adhesion and long-lasting performance on demanding road surfaces.

Each grade is selected based on project requirements and surface conditions.

Slow-setting emulsion has a low viscosity and delayed setting time, which allows it to seep into the voids of granular base layers such as WMM or WBM. This deep penetration binds loose particles together, reduces dust, and forms a moisture-resistant layer that improves the structural integrity of the pavement.

In surface treatments, slow setting bitumen emulsion acts as a binding and sealing agent. It helps seal minor cracks, improve aggregate adhesion, reduce water infiltration, and restore worn road surfaces. This makes it highly effective for preventive maintenance and extending pavement life.

Benefits

  • High penetration of the existing base course.
  • Sealing of loose mineral particles.
  • To harden the base course.
